Formal Opening of the Chapel

Formal Opening of the Chapel

On 11th April 2019, almost 100 people gathered at Wisbech General Cemetery for the formal opening of the restored chapel. The afternoon commenced with the introduction of the Wisbech Society Chairman, Ray Johnson,  who welcomed the guests that were relatives of some of the people buried in the chapel, people and organisations who had contributed to the project by their work, donations, and help and support, as well as Trustees and Members of the Society.

Wisbech choir, Viva La Voce contributed two songs from the mezzanine level and the relatives as a group unveiled a plaque, made from an oak tree that had grown too close to the building.

David Crouch, Society Treasurer and Project Manager outlined the story of the cemetery and the project and Paul Eden, who edited and updated Kevin Rodger's earlier history of the Cemetery, launched the new book which is available on the Wisbech Society website. Guests were then able to take a walk around the cemetery, resplendent with its spring flowers, before returning to the chapel for refreshments.
